A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
