We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them. 47 (Even though) each miracle that We showed them was greater than the other. So We seized them with chastisement so that they may turn back. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Am I not better than this lowly man who can barely express himself? 52 "Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples. 56
