Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
