Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim 1 By the Clear Book 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
