The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,- 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 However, (all things) will return to your Lord. 8 Seest thou one who forbids- 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 What do you think? Have you seen if he belies and turns away, 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 The lying, sinful forelock - 16 Then let him call upon his henchmen! 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord). ۩ 19

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
