The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
