The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 and the day in splendour 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
