These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
