Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENWRAPPED in the cloak (of Prophethood), 1 Keep vigil the night long, save a little - 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 or a little more; and with recitation, recite the Koran. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly. 8 Lord of the East and Lord of the West – there is no God except Him, therefore make Him your sole Trustee of affairs. 9 And bear patiently the vain things they utter, and gracefully forsake them. 10 And let Me alone with the beliers, owners of ease: and respite thou them a little. 11 Verily with Us are heavy fetters and Scorch. 12 choking food and a painful punishment. 13 on the Day the earth and mountains shall shake and the mountains crumble into shifting sand dunes. 14 Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 and Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, whereupon We took him to task with a crushing grip. 16 Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?- 17 Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
