Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
