The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 purify your garments; 4 stay away from sins 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 and who still desires more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
