The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
