The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from a clot. 2 Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,- 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah) 11 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? 12 Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back? 13 Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We will call the guards of hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
