The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 "And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?" 148 "And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?" 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
