a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
