Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 So enter among My servants, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
