We afflicted the people of Pharaoh with famine and dearth of everything that they might take heed. 130 But when good befell them they said: This is due to us; and when evil afflicted them, they attributed it to the ill-luck of Musa and those with him; surely their evil fortune is only from Allah but most of them do not know. 131 They said to Moses, "No matter what miracle you show to bewitch us, we will not believe you." 132 We therefore sent against them the flood and the locusts and the vermin (or insects) and the frogs and the blood – separate signs; in response they were proud and were a guilty people. 133 When the torment would strike them, they would ask Moses, "Pray for us to your Lord through your covenant with Him. If He saves us from the torment, we shall certainly believe in you and permit you and the children of Israel to leave". 134 Then whensoever We removed the plague from them, till a term which they were to reach, lo! they were breaking faith. 135 We therefore took revenge from them; so We drowned them in the sea for they used to deny Our signs and were ignoring them. 136 And We made a people, considered weak (and of no account), inheritors of lands in both east and west, - lands whereon We sent down Our blessings. The fair promise of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because they had patience and constancy, and We levelled to the ground the great works and fine buildings which Pharaoh and his people erected (with such pride). 137 And We brought the Children of Israel over the sea, and they came upon a people cleaving to idols they had. They said, 'Moses, make for us a god, as they have gods.' Said he, 'You are surely a people who are ignorant. 138 As for these here - verily, their way of life is bound to lead to destruction; and worthless is all that they have ever done!" 139 Should I choose for you a lord other than God who has favored you above all other people? 140 And (remember) when We did deliver you from Pharaoh's folk who were afflicting you with dreadful torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. That was a tremendous trial from your Lord. 141
