The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place 1 Upon the disbelievers the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those that pray 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and guard their private parts 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
