The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 Upon the disbelievers the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
