Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
HA MIM. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
