Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
