۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 He said to his father and to his nation: 'What, are these the statues to which you cling' 52 They said: We found our fathers worshipping them. 53 He said: 'Truly, you and your fathers are in clear error' 54 They asked: "Hast thou come unto us [with this claim] in all earnest - or art thou one of those jesters?" 55 He said: Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them; and I am of those who testify unto that. 56 Abraham said to himself, "By God! I will devise a plan against their idols when they are away." 57 So he smashed them up to pieces with the exception of the biggest, so that they may turn to it. 58 They said, "Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be some man of impiety!" 59 Some of them said, "We heard a youth called Abraham speaking against the idols". 60 They said: "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify." 61 They said: art thou the one who hath wrought this unto our gods, O Ibrahim? 62 He answered, "Rather this biggest one of them did it. Ask them, if they can speak." 63 And so they turned upon one another, saying, "Behold, it is you who are doing wrong." 64 Again they were inverted upon their heads; saying, “You know well that these do not speak.” 65 He said: 'Would you then worship that, instead of Allah, which can neither help nor harm you? 66 Fie on you and on what you serve besides Allah; what! do you not then understand? 67 They said: "Burn him, and save your gods, if you are men of action." 68 We said: "O fire, become coolness and safety for Abraham." 69 They had sought to do evil to him, but We caused them to be the worst losers, 70 But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac and [Isaac's son] Jacob as an additional gift and caused all of them to be righteous men, 72 And We made them leaders who guide by Our command, and We sent them the divine revelation to do good deeds and to keep the prayer established and to give charity; and they used to worship Us. 73 AND UNTO Lot, too, We vouchsafed sound judgment and knowledge [of right and wrong,] and saved him from that community which was given to deeds of abomination. [We destroyed those people - for,] verily, they were people lost in evil, depraved 74 and We admitted him into Our mercy; he was of the righteous. 75
