He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 You pay full attention, 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and in awe [of God] 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 lofty and pure, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 noble and pious. 16 Perish man! how ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
