The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. 25
