The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
