The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
