He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to him thou attendest 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 And hath fear, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 olives, dates, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 and his mother and his father; 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
