Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
