The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 Pollution shun! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
