Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 The command that We have been sending 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
