He Frowned ('Abasa)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 to a rich man, 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 It is they, the disbelievers, the sinners. 42
