The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
