A company of the former peoples 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
