The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said, "This is most surely a skillful magician, 109 who desires to expel you from your land; what do you command?' 110 Others said: 'Put them off a while, he and his brother, and send forth to your cities gatherers 111 That they may bring to thee every magician knowing. 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh and said: 'Shall we have a reward if we win?' 113 He said, “Yes, and you will then become close to me.” 114 They said: O Musa! either thou cast down, or we shall be the ones to cast down. 115 He answered: "You throw [first]." And when they threw down [their staffs,] they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and struck them with awe, and produced mighty sorcery. 116 We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time. 117 ۞ Thus was the Truth vindicated and that which they were doing was made vain. 118 They were therefore defeated here and they turned back humiliated. 119 And the wizards fell down prostrate, 120 Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,- 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron' 122 Pharaoh said: 'Do you believe in Him before I permit? This is a plot that you have contrived in the city in order to expel its people from it. Now you shall know! 123 I will cut off on opposite sides a hand and a foot, and then crucify you all' 124 They said: Surely to our Lord shall we go back: 125 You only take revenge on us because we believed in the Lord when we saw His miracles. Lord, grant us patience and let us die Muslims (submitted to God)." 126
