A throng of the ancients 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all the former and the latter.” 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
