A crowd of earlier generations 39 and a good many of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 That, "We have indeed been penalised!" 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
