A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
