The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he looked round; 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
