The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
