Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HaMeem 1 By the Clear Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
