Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 And ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
