He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because a blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 you attended to him, 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and fears (Allah), 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and pious. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 From what has God created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 olives, dates, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 and his mother and his father; 35 wife and sons, 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Some faces that Day, will be bright (true believers of Islamic Monotheism). 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
