Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 The night as it advances, 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
