Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O the contented soul! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My servants. 29 enter My Paradise! 30
