The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise, and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 stay away from sins 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and who still desires more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
