The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
