Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
