He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 Yet you pay attention 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And he feareth 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what did He create him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 And olives and palms 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 but others will be gloomy 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
