In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O thou enwrapped in thy robes, 1 Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof 3 or add to it [at will]; and [during that time] recite the Qur'an calmly and distinctly, with thy mind attuned to its meaning. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent. 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 And remember the Name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no Allah save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender - 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the deniers, who live a life of comfort, and bear with them a little longer. 11 Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire 12 and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement, 13 upon the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains become a slipping heap of sand. 14 Surely We have sent to you an Apostle, a witness against you, as We sent an apostle to Firon. 15 and Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, whereupon We took him to task with a crushing grip. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 The heavens itself will be rent asunder (on that day). His promise is bound to be fulfilled. 18 This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! 19
