The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
