The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those who pray, 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 and guard their private parts 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
